Agile Strategy Implementation with OKR

With many parallel projects and limited resources, this focus can quickly get lost. This is where OKRs come in: strategic goals are translated into concrete Objectives and Key Results and connected with projects, actions, and initiatives.

The real value lies in how the elements work together: vision and strategic goals provide orientation, OKRs focus the next stage, and projects and initiatives turn them into action. Regular Reviews and Retrospectives make it possible to incorporate learning and adjust the path forward.

OKR does not automatically lead to better prioritization, but they create a framework in which priorities have to be decided consciously. Before a new cycle begins, the key question is: What do we really want – and realistically have the capacity – to achieve now?

This becomes especially important when many valuable initiatives are competing for the same limited time and resources. In that situation, it is not enough to prioritize goals. Decisions also need to be made about what can wait and what currently does not contribute enough strategic value.

Prioritization begins when not everything can be equally important at the same time.

OKRs are particularly useful when strategic development needs to be focused and managed in shorter cycles. KPIs serve a different purpose: they typically show how important performance or status indicators are developing over time.

In practice, it is therefore rarely an either-or decision. What matters is that strategic goals, metrics, OKRs, projects, and initiatives work together in a meaningful way instead of creating several disconnected management systems.

Not every goal needs an OKR – and not every important metric is a Key Result.

Well-written Objectives and Key Results alone do not make OKRs effective. If existing priorities remain untouched and OKRs are simply added on top of all current projects, the result is more likely to be additional complexity than greater focus.

That is why working with OKRs also requires some uncomfortable questions: What really takes priority? What will no longer be pursued?
